Why moving quotes range from $800 to $10,000

DecidePlan Editorial · Published August 14, 2026

Search "average cost of moving" and you'll find a published range wide enough to be nearly meaningless on its own: $800 on the low end, over $10,000 on the high end. That's not inconsistent research — it's two genuinely different services being described with one phrase. A local move and a long-distance move are priced on entirely different models, and knowing which one you're actually planning gets you most of the way to a real estimate.

Local moves: priced by time

Local movers typically charge by the hour, not by weight. A standard two-mover crew runs roughly $100–$200 per hour in 2026, and a typical 2-3 bedroom local move lands around $1,250 on average, with a broader range of $800–$2,500 depending on how much you have and how efficiently it goes. The number here is mostly a function of how many hours the job takes — how much stuff you have, how many flights of stairs, whether there's a elevator, how far the truck has to park from the door.

Long-distance moves: priced by weight and distance

Long-distance and interstate movers price differently — by the weight or volume of your shipment, the distance, and which services you add (packing, storage, insurance). Reported averages run around $4,890, with a realistic range from about $1,500 for a smaller move under 1,000 miles up to $8,000+ for a full household moving cross-country. This is why the same "average cost of moving" search returns numbers that don't overlap with the local-move figures at all — it's not the same transaction.

What moves the number inside each category

  • Home size — a studio and a 4-bedroom house are not the same job even at the same distance.
  • Season — moving during peak summer months typically costs more than an off-season move.
  • Services beyond basic labor — packing, storage, and specialty-item handling are usually priced separately, and add up quickly if you assume they're included.

Use the moving calculator

The fastest way to make the published range useful is to stop treating it as one number and start with the two questions that actually determine which end of it applies to you: how big is your home, and how far are you going. Everything else in this article is a refinement on top of those two answers.
