About DecidePlan

What this is

DecidePlan turns “how much should I spend on X?” into a specific, personalized spending range. It covers 20 major purchase categories, from weddings and home renovation to cars and laptops. The free calculator asks a handful of questions about income, savings, debt, and the specifics of the purchase, then returns a range with three tiers — Comfortable, Sweet Spot, and Stretch.

How the range is calculated

Each category uses a deterministic model, not an AI guess: it takes your income, savings, debt, and category-specific factors, then computes a range using sourced benchmark data and an affordability model based on savings capacity and income. The same inputs always produce the same output. Every category page shows its methodology, the assumptions behind the number, the data sources used, and when the benchmark data was last updated.

Editorial independence

The calculated ranges are never influenced by affiliate or advertising relationships. Some outbound links on the site are affiliate links and may earn DecidePlan a commission — this is disclosed on every page where it applies, and it never changes the Comfortable, Sweet Spot, Stretch, or Above-This numbers a user sees. The recommendation always comes before the monetization.

What this is not

DecidePlan is a decision-support tool, not a financial advisor and not a price-comparison or coupon site. It is not a licensed advisory service.
